Jamaica Has Joined the Global EV Revolution

There’s a global move towards electric vehicles

as part of an international strategy to address climate change and air quality concerns. Governments worldwide are including the replacement of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles with Electric Vehicles (EVs) in their plans to reduce greenhouse gases.

Jamaica's National Agenda for Electric Mobility

Here in Jamaica, the Government has placed the electrification of transportation on the national agenda, as the country seeks to reduce dependence on imported fuel and protect our natural environment. Business operators are including more EVs in their fleets, to improve operating efficiency. More and more, consumers are choosing electric vehicles in order to save money and help protect the environment.

Consumer Trends and Future Outlook

Jamaica is definitely driving towards an electric mobility future, and motorists are getting ready to be a part of the journey! In a 2023 survey, more than 40% of respondents said they plan to buy an electric vehicle at some point in the future.

JPS Leading The EV Revolution

JPS is playing our part in powering the electric mobility revolution.

We believe that, combined with the addition of more renewables to the grid, the electrification of transportation presents an opportunity for climate change mitigation and the preservation of the environment for our children and their children.

We are supporting the national Electric Vehicle strategy by adding renewables, strengthening the power grid, and investing in infrastructure to facilitate the growth of electric vehicle ownership across the island.

We are also building partnerships with both private and public sector entities, to ensure that a sustainable ecosystem is in place to support the emerging electric vehicle sector.

JPS Charge ‘n Go Public Charging Network

When there was still only a handful of electric vehicles on the island, JPS piloted the installation of public EV charging infrastructure. Since 2021, when we officially launched our first Charge ‘N Go public EV charger, we have been rolling out charging stations across the island, in anticipation of the inevitable increase in EV ownership.

Motorists can now confidently drive from one end of the island to the other, knowing that there is always an EV charging station in close range. JPS’ expanding Charge ‘n Go locations can be found in the following parishes: Portland, Kingston & St Andrew, St Ann, St James, Westmoreland and Clarendon. And there are more locations on the way – stay tuned!

Are Electric Vehicles Safe?

There are still questions about the safety of electric vehicle technology, because it is relatively new. The good news is that the research has shown that electric vehicles are even safer than traditional vehicles, as long as they are operated according to the manufacturers’ guidelines.

Here are some reasons EVs are considered safer than traditional gasoline vehicles

Electric vehicles do not have a fuel system, which means they do not pose the same fire risks as traditional cars.

The lower center of gravity in electric vehicles gives the car a more stable base and reduces the risk of tipping or rolling over, even in a high-speed collision.

The regenerative braking technology used in EVs can help prevent accidents caused by brake failure or malfunction.

Advanced safety features like automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring can help prevent accidents caused by driver error.

In crashes involving electric vehicles in the US, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concluded that the chances of the people involved getting injured were lower than they were with vehicles that run on gasoline and diesel engines.

Electric Vehicle Safety Tips

Proper maintenance and charging of your vehicle is essential for your safety, and for the health of your vehicle. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for operating and charging your EV.

Here are 10 of our EV Safety tips
1.

Electric vehicles do not have a fuel system, which means they do not pose the same fire risks as traditional cars.

2.

Install a residual current device with the charging unit. It will turn off the power if a fault is detected and help prevent a fire.

3.

Maintain the components of your charging station according to the manufacturer’s maintenance guidelines

4.

If you’re charging away from home, always use a certified charging station.

5.

Before plugging in the charging cable, inspect it for any sign of damage. If the cable is damaged, do not use it.

6.

Avoid charging in extreme temperatures (above 100 degrees Fahrenheit), as this can reduce the lifespan of your EV battery.

7.

Avoid charging your EV in wet conditions. If you must charge in the rain, make sure the charging station and the charging cable are not exposed to water.

8.

Never use a multi-plug adapter or extension cord.

9.

Avoid draining the battery to 0% or charging up to 100%. If you do so regularly, it may impact the battery life. Always try to maintain the battery status between 20% to 80%.

10.

Place all charging device components out of reach of children when not in use.
