(Kingston, January 30, 2026) JPS has restored electricity supply to 96% of its customers island-wide, achieving this milestone ahead of its January 31 restoration target.
Now three months into the recovery effort, and with fewer than 28,000 customers awaiting reconnection, JPS is in the final stretch of restoration, commonly referred to as the “last mile.” This phase is the most complex and resource-intensive, as it involves redesigning and rebuilding severely damaged infrastructure, navigating difficult terrain in remote communities, and restoring supply to smaller clusters of customers.
The progress achieved since Category 5 Hurricane Melissa made landfall on October 28 last year reflects the dedication and technical expertise of JPS crews, supported by regional and international line workers. The Company also credits consistent and coordinated engagement with key stakeholders for enabling this progress. According to senior leaders at JPS, collaboration with political representatives, members of the business community, utility partners, and customers has been critical in facilitating access, aligning priorities, managing expectations, and supporting steady advancement across affected parishes.
Grinding slow, but grinding still
Despite the challenges associated with the final phase of restoration, JPS reports continued progress. Over the last 48 hours, sections of several communities have been energized across multiple parishes, including:
Westmoreland: Whithorn Police Station and courthouse; FLOW and Digicel cell sites in Whithorn; and sections of Dunbar River, Deans Valley, Big Bridge, Hatfield, Carawina, Georges Plain, Little London, Pleasant Park, and Russia.
St. James: Bus Stop Lane, Montpelier (Guinep Tree), Flamstead, Tangle River, German Town, Spring Garden, Plum, Mount Horeb (including Mount Horeb All Age & Infant School), Flagstaff, Montpelier (including NWC Pumping Station), Maroon Town, Jackson Road, Flamstead, Bevin Avenue and Howard Cooke Highway (including Digicel Cell Site and Trumpet Hall Church)
St. Elizabeth: Bethlehem Moravian College, Malvern Police Station, sections of Malvern, Flagaman, Middle Quarters, Middlesex, Darliston and Thornton.
While acknowledging the frustration of residents who remain without power, JPS says crews remain mobilised across the island, working assiduously to restore electricity supply as safely and quickly as possible. As restoration work continues, energy hubs have been established in affected communities to provide residents with access to power for charging devices, internet connectivity, and other essential services. JPS thanks customers for their continued patience and understanding as restoration efforts continue
