Update: The gas supply issue has been resolved and power was restored to all customers at 1:45pm
JPS customers in several communities are now without electricity as a result of a problem at the Exelerate Energy LNG facility that supplies natural gas to some power plants, combined with the unavailability of renewables and several generating units operated by Independent Power Producers (IPPs). A technical issue that has developed at the LNG facility has interrupted the supply of fuel to the plants. The Jamalco power plant in Clarendon and the SJPC power plant in St. Catherine are the two power generation facilities immediately impacted. The situation has been made worse by the fact that several plants operated by Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are unavailable or unable to operate on back-up fuel. In addition, power supply from renewables is intermittent due to the unavailability of wind or cloud cover impacting the solar generating facilities. Exelerate Energy, operators of the LNG facility, and the Independent Power Producers, are working to restore normalcy in the shortest possible time.
JPS apologizes to customers for the inconvenience caused. The company is working with the fuel supplier and the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to ensure normalcy as soon as possible.
The company is projecting that all customers should have their power restored by 2:00pm.
