In 2020, the JPS Foundation entered into a Technical Cooperation Agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank to execute the Building a Sustainable Electric Mobility Ecosystem for Inclusion and Access project rebranded eDrive. Funded by JPS and IDB Lab project eDrive aims to support the development of the electric mobility in Jamaica through three main focus areas.

The focus of this component is piloting the early adoption of BEVs in Jamaica to support a transition to sustainable, low-cost, low-carbon transport through an aggressive and targeted data-driven communication campaign. This includes traditional and digital media as well as forums, meetings and workshops with various stakeholder groups.

The JPS Foundation and IDB Lab have launched Project eDrive in preparation for the new era of business opportunities expected to follow the approval of the Electric Vehicle Mobility Policy announced on Wednesday, June 8, by Minister of Science Energy and Technology Daryl Vaz.

Component 2 - Innovative Technology & Finance
The focus of this component is to support the development of innovative financing models that put BEVs within reach of the average Jamaican, and the creation of entrepreneurial and employment opportunities associated with BEV adoption, to include women, who generally have low participation in the transport and energy sector.
This component also assessed the feasibility and technical design for an Electric Mobility Fund Facility to serve as a source of concessionary financing to support local financial institutions interested in offering green financial products, including low-interest car and renewable energy loans, and competitive lease arrangements, to stimulate private sector adoption and make BEVs more accessible to a wider public until price-parity with ICEVs is a reality in Jamaica.
eDrive Innovation Challenge
Project eDrive powered by JPS Foundation and IDB Lab. The Innovation Challenge comprises of six (6) challenges with ten (10) companies sharing their ideas to be the top innovator. The innovators were selected from the eDrive Entrepreneurship Boot Camp held May 2022 in partnership with the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship - Caribbean.
The eDrive Internship
Twenty-one students from tertiary institutions across the island are benefiting from Project eDrive’s 2023 Summer Internship Programme.The internship programme which started in July goes up till September, seeks to form a gateway into working world for students.

Component 3 –Technical Capacity Building & Training
The focus of this component is to develop technical capacities in local training institutes to enable them to meet the new demand for skills arising from the emergence of an electric mobility industry. The project partnered with the HEART/NTA Trust to develop three EV specific training programs offered to mechanics and first responders. The project identified and adapted existing internationally accredited training certificate programs which included the safety standards and technical skills required for upskilling mechanics and first responders, including firefighters and roadside assistance personnel.

Electric Hybrid Vehicle Hazard Management
The Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Hazard Management Level 1 qualification is intended for Emergency and Vehicle Recover Personnel who may encounter accident damaged or broken down electrical/hybrid (all variations) vehicles to include emergency services and recovery operators. It contains the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to work safely with Electric/Hybrid vehicles that may have or had damage to its high energy/electrical system, during emergency and recovery.
Electric Hybrid Vehicle Hazard Management
The Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Level 2 programme offers an introduction to an experienced auto mechanic for this specialised industry sector. It also compliments their current industry qualifications and experience in motor vehicle repairs. The programme is designed for persons who may encounter electric/hybrid vehicles within a routine maintenance situation.
Electric Hybrid Vehicle Systems Repair & Replacement
This Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement Level 3 programme will enable experienced mechanics to maintain and repair electric/hybrid vehicles. Persons who complete this programme can be employed in job roles such as electric/hybrid vehicle maintenance and repair technicians.
